Authenticity on the internet matters more than ever. As people increasingly turn to AI tools for answers and recommendations, the conversations taking place beyond your website can help shape how your business is understood. Community discussions, customer perspectives, and independent mentions can add credibility to the claims you make about your own expertise.

This insight is part three of a four-part series. Together, the series offers a practical framework for helping businesses adapt as AI changes how audiences discover, evaluate, and trust information online.

Part 1 introduced four foundational steps for improving visibility in AI-driven search, while Part 2 explored how advanced content, resource hubs, schema, and thought leadership can strengthen your owned digital presence. Part 3 looks beyond your website to examine how genuine community participation and earned third-party recognition can build authority and support AI discovery.

Understanding AI models and community signals

While official business content remains important for GEO, AI models increasingly look to community discussions, user recommendations, and authentic conversations to better understand a business’s real-world reputation and relevance. This creates opportunities for businesses willing to engage genuinely rather than promotionally.

AI and search systems are becoming better at identifying low-quality, repetitive, or manipulative content. As these systems evolve, success increasingly depends on contributing information people genuinely find useful and earning credibility over time, rather than attempting to manufacture signals for AI.

Why Reddit matters for GEO

This strategy can apply to many online communities, but Reddit stands out because its discussions are often detailed, candid, and centered on the kinds of specific questions people also ask AI tools. In 2024, Reddit and OpenAI announced a partnership that provides OpenAI access to Reddit’s Data API, helping its products better understand and surface relevant Reddit content.

Build a transparent and accountable presence

Use a company account or clearly identified subject-matter expert account that accurately represents the person or organization participating. If several employees contribute, each should participate independently through their own account and disclose their relationship with the business when relevant.

Reddit prohibits vote manipulation and coordinated voting. Businesses should never use multiple identities, coordinated voting, or staged support to make a post or opinion appear more popular than it is.

Before participating:

  • Review each community’s rules, especially those covering self-promotion, external links, professional advice, and disclosure.
  • Spend time observing the community’s tone, recurring questions, and expectations before contributing.
  • Determine when employees or representatives should disclose their affiliation with the business.
  • Assign contributors who can answer questions from direct knowledge and experience rather than relying on generic marketing responses.
  • Establish an internal approval and recordkeeping process when required by company policy or industry regulation.

Prioritize communities such as:

  • Industry-specific subreddits with active professional discussions
  • Business communities where prospective clients and industry peers exchange information
  • Location-based communities relevant to your geographic market
  • Topic-focused communities where your expertise directly addresses recurring questions

The 90/10 rule for authentic engagement

The commonly referenced 90/10 rule, where 90% of contributions are helpful and 10% are promotional, can serve as a useful reminder. However, it should not be treated as a quota. A post can still feel overly promotional regardless of how many non-promotional comments came before it.

A better standard is to ask whether the contribution would remain useful if your company name and link were removed. Before posting, consider:

  • Does the response answer the question without requiring someone to visit our website?
  • Are factual, comparative, or performance-related claims supported by credible evidence?
  • Have we disclosed our affiliation when it could affect how the response is interpreted?
  • Are we contributing because we can add something meaningful, or simply because the discussion is receiving attention?

High-value contributions can include:

  • Educational responses. Provide clear, actionable guidance based on your expertise without forcing a reference to your services.
  • Trend analysis. Add context to industry developments using current data, credible sources, and a clear point of view.
  • Problem-solving. Share a practical framework that helps readers understand how to approach a common challenge, showcasing your methodology and thinking.
  • Case studies and original evidence. Contribute research, testing, or case-study findings that demonstrate real-world outcomes and reinforce your authority through proven performance.

Start conversations responsibly

Businesses can also begin discussions around legitimate industry questions. The key is to start with a genuine information need rather than a predetermined opportunity to promote the company.

Where community rules permit, discussion prompts can follow the same natural-language format people often use when speaking with an AI assistant. Adaptable examples include:

  • “What should you look for when choosing an asset management firm?”
  • “How do you measure success in portfolio performance and manager selection?”
  • “What are the biggest challenges in transitioning between asset managers?”

The immediate value comes from the discussion itself: learning how people frame the issue, where opinions differ, and which questions remain unanswered. When the conversation is public, accessible, and relevant, it may also provide useful context that AI tools can surface when responding to similar queries.

Building community authority

Community authority develops through a pattern of helpful contributions and sound judgment. One popular post may create temporary visibility, but lasting recognition comes from consistently demonstrating expertise in the areas your business understands best.

Consistency builds recognition. Regular participation can establish familiarity with community members, but consistency should not come at the expense of relevance. Contribute when you have something useful to add rather than responding simply to maintain visibility.

Specificity demonstrates expertise. Frameworks, examples, methodologies, data, and firsthand observations are more valuable than broad statements that could have been written by anyone.

Listening creates value. Community discussions can reveal unanswered questions, changing terminology, common misconceptions, and emerging audience needs. Those insights can improve your content, services, research, and customer communications.

Cross-platform community presence

Reddit is an important platform, but putting all your eggs in one basket often leaves you vulnerable when things shift. Building a diversified presence across several relevant platforms can create a more resilient base of independent discussions and references for the AI models.

Diversification does not mean maintaining an active presence everywhere. Select a manageable number of platforms based on where your audience seeks information and where your expertise can contribute something meaningful. Depth of participation will usually create more value than spreading occasional promotional posts across many channels.

Platform selection strategy

Evaluate each platform based on its relevance to your audience, the quality of its discussions, and the opportunity to demonstrate expertise without relying on promotion.

Community type Best use What earns trust
Professional networks Industry commentary, peer discussions, and expert perspectives Specific insights supported by experience, examples, or evidence
Q&A platforms Answering focused questions that resemble natural-language AI queries Direct explanations, credible sourcing, and appropriate disclosure
Industry forums and associations Specialized discussion and technical knowledge sharing Fluency in the industry’s terminology, standards, and challenges
Review and directory platforms
Providing customer perspectives and accurate business information Complete profiles, transparent responses, and genuine reviews
Local communities Addressing specialized or geographically relevant needs Useful participation grounded in the community’s specific interests

The objective is not to replicate the same content across every platform. Adapt your contributions to the format, expectations, and needs of each community while maintaining a consistent position on your core areas of expertise.

Regulated-industry considerations

Financial services and other regulated businesses should align community participation with existing compliance requirements and internal communications policies. Public replies, testimonials, investment-related claims, performance discussions, and employee activity may require review, disclosure, supervision, or retention. GEO objectives do not override applicable advertising, recordkeeping, or professional-conduct requirements.

Build authority through digital collaboration

Community participation can lead to credible references beyond the original discussion. Guest articles, podcast pages, webinar recaps, partner resources, association profiles, and original research can create additional online evidence of a business’s expertise.

Prioritize opportunities that produce useful, publicly accessible content:

  • Guest contributions and expert commentary. Contribute to reputable industry publications that serve a relevant audience and apply credible editorial standards. Each contribution should provide standalone value rather than function as an extended advertisement.
  • Podcasts and webinars. Support appearances with a dedicated page containing a transcript, speaker information, key takeaways, a publication date, and links to supporting resources. This gives audiences and AI platforms clearer context around the discussion.
  • Collaborative research. Work with relevant organizations or experts to produce original findings. Publish the methodology, sources, definitions, dates, and limitations so the research can be accurately evaluated and referenced.
  • Partner and association content. Keep contributor profiles, business descriptions, author biographies, and areas of expertise accurate and consistent wherever your organization is featured.

Measurement and optimization

Community engagement is less straightforward to measure than many traditional search metrics, and GEO does not have a single, universal ranking to track. A useful measurement framework should combine community recognition, referral activity, AI visibility, and business outcomes.

Indicators worth monitoring include:

  • Recognition as a helpful contributor by community members.
  • Unprompted mentions and recommendations from relevant professionals.
  • Invitations to participate in community discussions, interviews, panels, or collaborative projects.
  • Referral traffic, content engagement, and qualified inquiries originating from community platforms.
  • More frequent and accurate mentions or citations across a consistent set of relevant AI queries.

To evaluate AI visibility more consistently, test a defined group of branded and non-branded prompts across the platforms most relevant to your audience. Record the prompt, platform, date, response, and cited sources, then look for patterns in how accurately and consistently the business is represented over time

Generative responses can vary between platforms and sessions, so one favorable answer should not be treated as proof of success. The more meaningful indicator is sustained improvement across multiple queries, sources, and testing periods.

A practical 90-day rollout

Days 1–30: Map and listen

  • Select three to five digital communities that closely align with your audience and expertise
  • Document each community’s rules, recurring questions, tone, and established contributors
  • Establish a baseline for community mentions, referral activity, and AI visibility
  • Define contributor responsibilities, disclosure requirements, and any necessary approval processes

Days 31–60: Contribute and learn

  • Answer questions within your strongest areas of expertise
  • Support factual claims with credible evidence and appropriate context
  • Track the topics that generate thoughtful responses and follow-up questions
  • Document audience language, recurring misconceptions, and gaps in existing information
  • Use those insights to strengthen your owned content strategy

Days 61–90: Refine and expand

  • Focus resources on the communities producing the most relevant engagement
  • Turn recurring questions into articles, FAQs, research, videos, or other useful resources
  • Pursue one relevant guest contribution, podcast, webinar, or research collaboration
  • Retest priority AI queries and compare the results with your original baseline
  • Evaluate whether community activity is contributing to referral traffic, qualified inquiries, and broader digital authority

Conclusion

Community engagement is the next step in a comprehensive authority-building strategy for GEO. The combination of strategic platform participation, authentic relationship development, and systematic signal tracking creates trust indicators that AI models increasingly prioritize for business recommendations.

Success requires patience and genuine value creation rather than quick promotional wins. Businesses implementing authentic community strategies will establish the credibility signals and professional recognition that provide sustainable advantages as AI models become more sophisticated at detecting and value.

Tips you should know

  • Run AI visibility checks in a private window while signed out. This limits account history, saved preferences, and existing cookies from influencing the response, providing a cleaner baseline closer to what a new user may see.
  • Location, platform updates, and natural response variability can still affect AI prompt results.
  • Check for Google’s new Generative AI performance reports in Search Console. Announced in June 2026, they provide dedicated visibility data for AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative AI features in Discover, although availability is still being expanded.
  • Factor LinkedIn into professional and B2B GEO strategies. A 2026 Semrush study ranked LinkedIn second among cited domains, appearing in 11% of responses across ChatGPT Search, Google AI Mode, and Perplexity.
  • Set realistic expectations for the potential impact. Princeton-led research found that tested GEO methods could improve source visibility by up to 40%, but results varied by domain.
